It’s a dreaded event for many computer owners – the day their computer conks out, refuses to work normally or simply resigns. Not only is this a huge inconvenience and a cause for concern due to the potential loss of data (imagine all that hard work gone in an instant), having a computer fixed can cost money. If you’re worried about how much you’ll pay in case you need computer repair services, here is a short guide to help give you an idea about the kind of cost you can expect:
In most cases, expect to be charged hourly rates.
Some computer repair services charge a fee based on the type of work done. In general, though, you will probably be charged by the hour. It will also be the technician who will determine the number of hours it will take to fix your computer.
So if he charges $30 an hour for a 2-hour repair, you’ll have to shell out $60 – that is, as long as the job gets done in 2 hours. Just in case it takes him far longer than that, you’ll have no choice but to pay more. If there are software or hardware to be installed, you might also have to pay additional charges for these.
To avoid getting overcharged by a slow-moving technician, always ask if what they’re charging is the full cost for your computer’s repair. It’s also wise to ask for guarantees. This will provide you a measure of protection after the repair has been completed. It will also help if the computer repair service offers a no-fix-no-fee guarantee. That way, if they fail at fixing your computer’s problem, you don’t have to pay for anything.
Consider computer repair services by remote.
There are companies that can fix your computer by hooking up to it online. They can fix your problems by remote and you can even monitor the progress in real time. These services can be very helpful only if your computer problems are software-related. They’re also quite affordable, charging fees that start from around $39.
Some repairs are costlier than others.
When it comes to computer repairs, the cost can be relative. It will depend on the extent of the repair required for the job, how many hours it would take to complete it, what types of hardware or software will be needed and to some extent, who does the fixing.
Simple checkups, diagnostics, installation and/or reinstallation, for example, can cost from a measly $25 to about $150 per hour. The low-end figure is usually for the most basic work done while higher figures are for more extensive repairs.
A caveat: there is a saying that holds true in computer repair services – at least, most of the time: ‘You get what you pay for’. Computer repair technicians are well-trained individuals. Not only that, they also run a business and that business often requires that they buy insurance, not just as a protection for themselves but also for their clients.
This is why you get computer repair services that don’t charge much and computer repair services that charge quite a bit. Frequently, the higher-end service is the one that is insured and offers an accompanying guarantee. Check the cheaper repair services and you’ll find that they offer neither insurance nor guarantee.
If you’re worried about how much to pay when looking for computer repair services, take these things into consideration. That way, you’ll be better able to make the right decision.

Music recording technology has come a long way from the earliest days of the mechanical phonograph cylinder and gramophone disk to magnetic tapes and digital recording. Recording engineering has now gained the status as the separate branch of science dealing with sound recording and reproduction.
Recent developments in music recording technology and editing have revolutionized the record, movie and television industries. Whether it is live musical performance, radio and television broadcasting, filmmaking, and recording music for selling (for example, CDs), all have to depend on sound recording and reproduction technology. To all major movie production houses, radio and TV stations, and musical groups have their in-house recording studio. The subject matter of recording music and reproducing it thorough diverse media is concerned with electrically or mechanically inscribing sound waves produced by spoken voice, singing, instrumental music, or various sound effects.
The two main divisions of music recording technology are analog recording and digital recording. Analog recording is achieved by means of diaphragm of a microphone that detects changes in atmospheric pressure created by audio sound waves, and records them graphically as sound waves on media such as a phonograph, a magnetic tape or a CD. The same process is inverted in reproducing or transmitting the music, when the diaphragm of a bigger loudspeaker modifies atmospheric pressure to form acoustic sound waves. Digital recording and reproduction uses the similar technology employed in analog process, the difference being the added digitization of the sound data and signals, allowing it to be stored and transmitted on a wider variety of media.
A Los Angeles Recording School, Musicians Institute has been established with the intention of imparting education in the area of recording arts. This recording college has developed a comprehensive recording program covering the entire gamut of learning the essentials of audio recording and reproduction. Individuals can learn audio recording at this institute and after passing out can find a career as an audio engineer or sound engineer. Audio engineers in general deal with the design, installation, and/or operation of sound recording, sound reinforcement, or sound broadcasting equipment, including large and small format consoles. In a recording studio setting, the audio engineer deals with recording, editing, manipulating, mixing, and/or mastering sound by technical means in order to realize an artist’s or record producer’s creative vision. While generally associated with music production, an audio engineer deals with sound for a wide range of applications, including post-production for video and film, live sound reinforcement, advertising, multimedia, and broadcasting. When referring to video games, an audio engineer may also be known as a computer programmer.
A new musical fusion has arisen in New York and it’s not the kind you can catch for ten dollars at a club in the West Village. For the many thousands of Chinese immigrants trying to stay afloat in a new world and for those westerners who have always wanted to understand the Chinese but have shied away for lack of a way in–for anyone who has wondered where the two civilizations connect, the answer may lie not in words, but in music.
Lisa Li is a master of the pipa (Chinese lute) and a graduate of the Chinese Conservatory of China. She has composed and performed across Europe, Asia and the United States, and her playing was featured in the Academy Award-winning movie The Last Emperor. Now, as one of the lead composers for New Tang Dynasty Television’s Chinese New Year Spectacular, a grand scale performance of traditional Chinese dance and song, Lisa has created what she believes to be a new kind of sound–based on ancient Chinese folk and religious music, but going beyond either of them.
“Music is alive, because in the view of the Chinese ancients, every single object in the world has life. In fact, in Chinese, when we refer to a musical note we call it a ‘live note,’” she explains. But according to Lisa, it must be composed and played from the heart—sometimes in ways that sound foreign to the western ear.
But the melodies are far from random. Lisa’s music, like all traditionally composed Chinese music, is based on a series of pentatonic (5-note) scales. This system has its roots in Taoism, which teaches that all matter is formed from the five basic elements of metal, earth, wood, fire, and water. It teaches that in order for a being to be healthy, it must have all of these elements in balance. So, from the Chinese perspective, a song or piece of music must also contain a uniquely crafted balance of these elements. There are also eight note scales that relate to the Taoist symbol called the bagua, which is most commonly known in the West as part of the practice of fengshui, or geomancy.
An example of this is the piece she wrote for the dance “A Dunhuang Dream.” The dance is set against a backdrop of thousands of caves carved into the sides of cliffs as they are in the Moago Grottoes in the Dunhuang region of China. Seated at the mouth of each cave is a Buddhist or Taoist deity. As the dancers emerge, one can hear from the orchestra pit the voices of the erhu (Chinese violin) and guzhen (zither), but these are soon joined by the more recognizable resonance of cello, bass, oboe, and brass. The result strikes the ear as achingly otherworldly and yet also solidly familiar.
In fact, the specific ya yue used in the score is the same as that found in the ancient pipa music written on scrolls that were discovered by archeologists in the actual Dunhuang caves years ago.
“I feel very deeply that music is a heavenly language, a divine language,” Lisa says. “It is able to uplift people’s hearts and minds. It is good for the soul.”

Most of the best music made this year will go unheard.
We have the Jane from Boston, who wants to find new music to make her feel good. She is not finding it on the radio. Myspace isn’t cutting it for her, as it’s more of a hassle to deal with new friend requests from mediocre bands than it is to find good music.
She resorts to her collection of old classics, listening to Dave Matthews Band’s “Under the Table and Dreaming” album and 3 Doors Down. Jane thinks, “I’d love to hear a band that took the Dave Matthews Band style and gave it an edgier 3 Doors Down sound. That’d be something I’d want to check out.”
Meanwhile, The Break Room from Nashville are struggling, playing in clubs for 15-20 people a night. Those people love the Break Room, and the heck of it is that the Break Room puts on an excellent show. Maybe Nashville isn’t the best place for the Break Room’s music, which happens to be a marriage of two styles: that of the Dave Matthews Band and 3 Doors Down.
Here’s the facts. Almost 300,000,000 people live in the United States. To go platinum in the music business it takes 1,000,000 records sold. So for the Break Room, 97 out of 100 people could hate them. But if the other three bought their album, that’s platinum.
Yet Jane is doomed to miss her potential new favorite band, and the Break Room will probably die an artist death from a lackluster career, because they couldn’t connect to those 3 people out of a 100 who wanted to hear them.
I have written this article to give you some tips on how you can find the band that is writing music specifically for you to hear.
IT JUST TAKES ASKING…
How many times have you bought a CD and was disappointed when you got home and listened to it? I’ll show you a cool technique that will stop this from ever happening again.
This works especially good at Borders Book Store but I’ve had success with it everywhere. If you ask nicely, they’ll almost always let you listen to a CD before you buy it. It’s not limited to the ones at the listening pod. Just simply ask an employee if there is any way you can listen to the CD you are tempted to buy. The only time they say no is when they only have one or two copies left.
This is a very convenient way to check out new music and it’s better than downloading sample mp3s for many reasons. First, the sound quality is better. Second, it is less time consuming and you don’t have to worry about viruses. And lastly, you get the actual listening experience as it’s intended to be. This means a more pleasureable experience for you!
Experiment. When was the last time you bought an album just because it had interesting cover art? Probably rarely if ever. Simply check an album out because the man on the cover is handsomely mysterious, or because you wonder if that guy in the clown suit really can play a mean guitar.
It’s simple. Just grab a CD that you are contemplating purchasing, ask a worker if you can hear the album first because you aren’t sure if you want to buy it, and 95 times out of a 100 your request will be fulfilled. They want you to make purchases at their store that you are happy with, so they are willing to help you out.
FAMILIARITY BREEDS COOL MUSIC
Last time I was at my Dad’s house I looked through his CD collection and found the following:
Metallica: Master of Puppets
Cherry Poppin Daddys: Zoot Suit Riot
George Strait: Strait out the Box, box set
Ray Charles: Genuis Loves Company
Straiht Wikid Crew: Kali Yuga Demolition Vol. 1
Wow. I never knew how diverse my Dad’s musical tastes were until I actually looked at his CDs. What a cool guy! Everything from metal (metallica) to rap (Straiht Wikid Crew).
The Cherry Popping Daddys were a band I’d heard about for many years but I had never listened to. I was never into the swing/big band style too much. I put it in the CD player and liked it. It made me want to dance. So I went out, bought the album and I’m happy with the choice I made.
Your friends and family have a whole collection of music that you may be unaware of. Browse their music and check out new stuff. See what you like. Find out what you don’t like. Don’t spend a penny. Be in control of what you decide you should hear as opposed to what is forced upon your ears.
And do the same in return. Let others preview your music collection. This can enrich your appreciation for you favorite musicians when you are able to discuss it with a new fan who happens to be a good friend.
THE LIBRARY IS STILL FREE
It’s free and now it’s very convenient. It ’s the library.
Most towns have their catalog online. I log onto the library’s card catalog from home looking for a certain CD. If they have it, I reserve it, and then I go down and pick it up.
Most libraries have inter-loan programs now, which are also searchable online. Because of this I have access to over 40 libraries. I simply reserve the CD I want and select my local library for the pick up location and 2-4 days later they call me and let me know my CD is in. I can’t believe how many people don’t know about this wonderful service!
The library is your musical friend. If you know this, you have thousands of albums at your finger tips for free.
MYSPACE & Beyond
In space nobody can you hear you scream. In myspace, you can hear anybody scream who has a cheap computer microphone and knows how to upload an mp3.
It’s a cesspool of music that isn’t so pleasing.
Here is what I like to do to kill the clutter. I find a great band that I already like. I then locate their myspace page. Often times I try myspace.com/bandname first. If I can’t find anything there I do a search for them on myspace and they either come up or a fan that is in love with them will come up. I then go to that person’s myspace page and 4 times out of 5 that band is in her top 8 friends. Click away.
I like Neutral Milk Hotel. I tried myspace.com/neutralmilkhotel and their page came up. Now here’s what I do. I look at Neutral Milk’s top 8. Often times these bands have bands they like in their top 8. So I check out THEIR favorite bands. I found a cool band called Donkey Boy on myspace by using this tactic. Who will you find?
CONCLUSION
I know you want to find music you love, and you want to find it quickly and conveniently, without spending a bunch of money. If you follow these tips in this article, I can assure that your life will be enriched with wonderful music with little effort on your part. All glories to you!
